Mashable Violating Google Adsense Rules By Encouraging Accidental Clicks : Post Updated

ADVERTISEMENTS

Note : Please note that Mashable has updated their ad format after reading this article and you can read Pete Cashmore comment here.

Today I opened Mashable dot com and was shocked to see that such a famous blog violating Google Adsense rules. Last time I told you about Google’s click and miss policy. Google says that they do not want accidental clicks on their ads but they want that users should only click on Google ads in which they’re interested.

Lets discuss about it in detail. As Google has made it clear that we cannot place ads in Under Menu And Drop Down Links, you can read more about this here, where I’ve explained about Google’s click and miss policy in detail. Now lets see how Mashable is running the risk of click and miss, in his blog.

Have a look at this post on Mashable where Palin Ningthoujam tells about some Twitter tools or this post that explains about Twitter Petitions. At the top, under News Channel, put mouse cursor on More News and you will see drop down menu opening on Google Ads, and Google official blog clearly warn users, not to use this ad format.

Conclusion

I cannot see this ad format on all the posts but most of them follows it. I am a big fan of Mashable and request them to fix this ad placement format so that others do not follow the same.

It shouldn’t be a great deal of an issue right? Is there any sense that just due to menus dropping onto google adsense advertisements, there is an increased chance of accidental clicking? I don’t get the point! After all, its not a drunk person who doesn’t know where to click. What causes google to make such a dumb policy?

Mashable is sort of celebrity blog and its also a premium adsense publisher I think. I am sure Google will overlook this “little” thing. (which is not very little had it been a regular blog)

Good point Deb. Even IMO Mashable are premium publishers of adsense and premium publishers have lots of benefit over normal adsense publisher in the terms of number of ad units and ad placement.

There are some rules that are are implied on both Premium and free users and in my opinion this click and miss rule is one of those.

Hey Gaganpreet,

Yup, we’re a premium publisher and we’ve been speaking to Adsense about trying new placements this week. We made a change to the ads last night but I don’t think any of us noticed the dropdown issue. Tend to agree that one isn’t ideal and we’re toggling it off for now.

Thx for the heads up,

–Pete

Well Gagan, you might have noticed premium publishers DO violate adsense tos which apply for us. If you observe top news sites, they do many things which might be against googles policies for normal publishers – like ad refreshing, popupos, pop unders, iframe etc.

Premium publishers can also place their ads on adult and gambling sites which is NONO for us. [Source]

Yea Premium publishers gets a lot of benefits but I can’t DIGEST the thing that Google can give the permission to encourage accidental clicks.
