Well if you are serious towards blogging than this should be your first step moving to custom domain means registering a .com or any other domain for your blog. The search for your perfect domain name might go haywire may be name you thought for your blog has already been taken by someone and other related issue but coming to point now, I have registered a domain few months back and had a mixed experience in this post i will tell you about the Do’s and Don’t of it.
Q: Am happy with my blogspot.com address now why do i need to move to a new domain ??
A: Its completely upto you whether you wish to move to a new address or not, but having a address like www.yourblogname.com sounds and looks more professional and there are many other perks of having a domain which i will discuss ahead.
Q : Ok but how to register a Domain a name??
A: Blogger and Geeks from all over the web prefer GoDaddy for registering their Domain its good but you can use Google apps for registering a domain name and even blogger can do the trick.
But a common problem with each of the mention ways is that they require credit card or checks of US based banks for payment if you have credit card than its good for you but if you don’t have a credit card than you can choose indigenous sites like Rediff ,Indiatimes Net4 and Manashosting.
But am partial to Manashosting because of their tech support you give them your phone no they will call you and explain all the facts and figures service listed above all modes of payment Deposit check or cash in their account or demand drafts.
Q: Ok now i have registered a Domain name now how set it up??
A: You have your domain now the rest of process is fairly simple go to your blogger account and under publishing tab
Choose custom domain option and if have bought that domain than click Switch to advance setting.

But also you need to tweak some CNAME settings in your domain host Blogger offers how to instruction on doing this for some popular hosts you can find that here.
But the major you may face during or after this whole process is the Blogger inefficiency to redirect http://yourblog.com to your blog by this i mean that if type you domain name without prefix www than it may not be directed to your this was the problem that i faced when registered domain for my blog.Better a look @Screenshots below
Blog name with www prefix
And without prefixing www

Even blogger has that option to fix this but it does not works properly take a look

To fix this you need to create a redirect page Amanda @Bloggerbuster has detailed everything about this issue in this post so follow instruction and you are done.
But keep one thing in your mind while registering your Domain is the site you choose to register your domain must offer some hosting along with registration so you upload files to your host sever to fix such issues.
There’s bunch of things that you can do with your new domain which i will discuss in future posts.
Keep sharing your experience they are vital inputs.

Hi alok,
This tutorial is really useful.I hadn’t found such a nice one when i tried to move to custom domain in blogger and so it was a little miserable for me.At that time i had thought of writing a tutorial for this but now i am happy that you have such a nice one which would be helpful for all the bloggers.
Hi Alok! Nice explanation! I just want to add, that using Name.com we have an option to forward the root domain to other aliases like www or anything we want! Also in godaddy we can forward the root level domain [I think it is automatic when used along with blogger]!
As I have used name.com only, so here is the process:
1. Setup the CName in the usual way!
2. From the Domain control panel, click on the Forward domain and then set a 301 perma-redirection to redirect your root domain.com to http://www.domain.com
And you are done without using any hosting!
@swashata Good explanation keep them coming
