Samsung Series 7 Chronos Laptop Looks and Feel

Just like most of the top notebooks of Samsung, Series 7 Chronos has a gunmetal gray chassis made up of brushed aluminum. The sides, lid, deck and the bottom are made up of same material. At dimensions standing at 14.3×9.3×0.9 inches, Chronos 7 is thinner and lighter than Dell XPS 15z (15.2 x 10.3 x 0.97 inches). It is also lighter than Dell XPS 15z and HP Envy 15 but heavier than Sony Vaio S.

The series 7 notebooks from Samsung have a distinct look, like that of Series 9 and we liked the clean lines and the keyboard deck felt quite rigid. The display bezel is quire thin and at 5.1 pounds, the laptop is quite easy to carry. The battery is sealed inside the laptop, which was expected because of the thin nature of the notebook. Users can upgrade the RAM by removing a small screw underneath the laptop but one needs some technical skills to upgrade the hard drive.

The 15.6 inches matte display of the notebook came up with sharp and crisp images which were relatively colorful. While streaming 1080p YouTube videos of RA-One and Don 2, the colors were quite accurate but not that deep. We found sharper resolution from screens of Dell XPS 15z, Sony Vaio S and HP Envy 15. The screen seemed to be a bit dim and even with full brightness on, the images started fading out when the screen was moved just 45 degrees.

Since the screen is not glossy in nature, there were not many reflections and we had no problems in viewing it outdoors and in bright rooms. Since the screen is not IPS, hence side viewing angles are quite decent than top viewing angles. It would have been good, if Samsung would have used a higher quality TN screen panel or offered an IPS option. But then it would have raised the cost of the machine.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos Keyboard and Touchpad

The laptop is equipped with a backlit keyboard with adjustable backlight brightness. There is also a separate number pad and we did not notice any significant keyboard flex. The keys are quite responsive and offered a good travel and tactile feedback. Unlike in HP Envy 15, the keys do not bounce. The keyboard provided a decent typing experience. Since the keyboard has a separate number pad, the track pad is off the center to the left but soon users will get used to it.

The 4.2×3 inches Elan touchpad performed quite well and the track pad is better than most of laptops we have reviewed so far. The surface is quite smooth and it feels similar to that of MacBook Pro. It is quite easy to glide across it and it supports multi-touch gestures. We found that the two and three fingers gestures worked quite well. We were a bit disappointed to note that there are no separate mouse buttons.
