Samsung Series 7 Chronos Laptop Looks and Feel

Just like most of the top notebooks of Samsung, Series 7 Chronos has a gunmetal gray chassis made up of brushed aluminum. The sides, lid, deck and the bottom are made up of same material. At dimensions standing at 14.3×9.3×0.9 inches, Chronos 7 is thinner and lighter than Dell XPS 15z (15.2 x 10.3 x 0.97 inches). It is also lighter than Dell XPS 15z and HP Envy 15 but heavier than Sony Vaio S.

The series 7 notebooks from Samsung have a distinct look, like that of Series 9 and we liked the clean lines and the keyboard deck felt quite rigid. The display bezel is quire thin and at 5.1 pounds, the laptop is quite easy to carry. The battery is sealed inside the laptop, which was expected because of the thin nature of the notebook. Users can upgrade the RAM by removing a small screw underneath the laptop but one needs some technical skills to upgrade the hard drive.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos Notebook Screen

The 15.6 inches matte display of the notebook came up with sharp and crisp images which were relatively colorful. While streaming 1080p YouTube videos of RA-One and Don 2, the colors were quite accurate but not that deep. We found sharper resolution from screens of Dell XPS 15z, Sony Vaio S and HP Envy 15. The screen seemed to be a bit dim and even with full brightness on, the images started fading out when the screen was moved just 45 degrees.

Since the screen is not glossy in nature, there were not many reflections and we had no problems in viewing it outdoors and in bright rooms. Since the screen is not IPS, hence side viewing angles are quite decent than top viewing angles. It would have been good, if Samsung would have used a higher quality TN screen panel or offered an IPS option. But then it would have raised the cost of the machine.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos Keyboard and Touchpad

The laptop is equipped with a backlit keyboard with adjustable backlight brightness. There is also a separate number pad and we did not notice any significant keyboard flex. The keys are quite responsive and offered a good travel and tactile feedback. Unlike in HP Envy 15, the keys do not bounce. The keyboard provided a decent typing experience. Since the keyboard has a separate number pad, the track pad is off the center to the left but soon users will get used to it.

The 4.2×3 inches Elan touchpad performed quite well and the track pad is better than most of laptops we have reviewed so far. The surface is quite smooth and it feels similar to that of MacBook Pro. It is quite easy to glide across it and it supports multi-touch gestures. We found that the two and three fingers gestures worked quite well. We were a bit disappointed to note that there are no separate mouse buttons.

Ports and Webcam

Selection of ports is quite good with Series 7 Chronos. There are a couple of USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, a HDMI port, a gigabit Ethernet and a mini VGA port. The notebook also has an SD card reader along with a combination of mic-headphone jack as well as a 720p webcam with mic. The notebook also has a Wi-Fi 802.11/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 HS. The laptop also has a 1.3MP HD webcam which took sharp and colorful images, but in dim light the images were grainy. But under direct light source, the quality of images was pretty accurate.

With Radeon 6750M graphics card, Samsung Series 7 Chronos is quite competent to play high end games and full HD videos. The graphics performed quite well and the graphics chip uses AMD’s graphics-switching technology which allows the machine to switch to low powered Intel integrated graphics while performing less CPU intensive tasks.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos Audio and Heat

The bottom mounted speakers of Dell’s XPS line provided accurate music playback which is quite loud to fill a large room. We did not face any problems while listening to music or hearing dialogues of a movie. In our testing the machine remained relatively cool. After streaming a full HD video for about half an hour the chassis remained fairly cool and the touchpad and the keyboard remained fairly cool.

With a 2.2GHz quad-core i7-2675QM CPU and AMD Radeon 6750M switchable graphics coupled with 8GB of RAM and 750 GB hard-drive, the laptop has enough muscle to perform almost anything thrown at it. Whether we played games or watched full HD videos the performance was quite solid.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos boasts of long battery life. In our battery test, the notebook gave a strong run time of around 6 hours 10 minutes which involved continuous surfing over Wi-Fi.

Why dwm.exe is Necessary?

This application is required for the visual effects that occur in the MS Windows operating system versions like Vista and Windows 7, such as live Windows previews. It is a system process that is essential for proper functioning of the Windows operating system.

Is dwm.exe a Virus?

No. This is not a harmful process. It is considered to be safe and does not cause any harm to the operating system. However, there are some reports that suggest the file can be used as a carrier for Trojan viruses.

Samsung Captivate Glide Looks And Design

The front of Captivate Glide looks very much the same as that of Samsung Galaxy S II. Samsung has used high quality plastic in construction of the device though we would have liked a metal clad body for the phone.

The phone is pretty compact and at dimensions standing at 124 x 64 x 13 mm, the phone is very much pocketable. It weighs 147 grams, 10 grams heavier than Apple iPhone. The rear of the phone is covered in black plastic which ensures a firm grip on the phone. Overall, Captivate Glide design and looks is quite simple and plain and Samsung has stuck with the same formula which has worked for it previously.

Glide boasts of a large 4 inch Super AMOLED display which displays pictures of 800×480 pixels. The images displayed were quite sharp and the colors were pretty deep. The brightness of the display measured by us was higher than what we found in HTC Vivid and LG Nitro. High contrast and wide viewing angles are characteristic for all Samsung phones which have AMOLED screens and Captivate Glide is no different. The screen is made up of gorilla glass which protects the screen from scratches and smudges.

Below the screen lies the four touch sensitive buttons like other high-end Android offering from Samsung. The ambient light and proximity sensor lies above the screen. On the left side of Captivate Glide, you get a volume rocker button while the power/lock key is located on the right hand side. On the top of the screen, we get a 3.5mm audio jack along with microUSB port.

Just like Galaxy S II devices, Captivate Glide runs on Samsung’s TouchWiz4.0 interface using Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread platform. Uses get 7 customizable home screens and pre-loaded resizable live widgets. One can remove the lock screen by swiping it in any direction and the home screen has plenty of tweaks. There are rectangular designs for the widgets and the application launcher has also seen a lot of improvements. It permits you to create folders inside it and the task manager offers a lot of functionality.

The dual core processor made it a delight to watch Youtube videos on the phone and it helped carrying out most of the operations quite effectively. With 8GB of internal memory, you can store a large amount of data. The memory can be increased to a mammoth 32GB.

Samsung Captivate Glide Keyboard

One of the great features of Captivate Glide is the presence of large physical QWERTY keypad which offers large keys with good amount of space. During typing we did not make any mistake and we liked the fact that there are dedicated keys for Search, Home, www. and .com. The keys are quite flat and sometimes we had to press them hard in order to get the right feedback.

Apart from the physical keyboard, Captivate Glide also features three touch-screen keyboards. The Android’s keyboard was quite tiny in portrait mode, but in landscape mode, they were quite large. Samsung’s own keyboard offered big keys in both portrait and landscape mode. The Swype keyboard offered easy admission to alternate symbols and punctuations. The haptic feedback was also very light.

Most of the applications found in Captivate Glide. With the Media Hub application, you can buy or rent movies. The Social Hub aggregates Twitter and Facebook updates at one place and with the All Share application, you can wirelessly share multimedia contents with DLNA compatible device. Samsung Captivate Glide Audio

The speakers on the backside of Captivate Glide are capable of filling a small room with crisp audio. We could hear songs pretty clearly. However, the lack of bass disappointed us to some extent.

Samsung Captivate Glide Camera Quality

Samsung Captivate Glide AT&T is equipped with a 8MP auto-focus camera which shoots photos up to 3264×2448 pixels. The camera comes with a LED flash but there is nothing to protect the lens or the shutter key. The interface of the camera looks very much the same with a couple of shortcut bars on either side of the viewfinder. In terms of features, the camera offers almost everything- touch focus, geo-tagging, image stabilization, smile detection, metering mode etc. The pictures came out really good and there is plenty of details. However, we noticed that in some cases, the camera was a bit slow to react. The phone is also equipped with a front facing 1.3MP camera which is great for carrying out video conference.

Unfortunately the camcoder of Captivate Glide AT&T is not capable of recording full HD videos. You have to be content with 720p videos. This is quite surprising considering the fact that the phone has enough horsepower to handle full HD videos. The interface of the video camera is very much the same as that of the camera. The front camera too is capable of recording videos. The videos are quite good and offer good amount of details.

Connectivity is quite robust with Captivate Glide. You get quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band 3G. Some of the other connectivity options you get with the device are
